Cherry Carpet & Flooring Celebrates 60 Years in Business

Cherry Carpet & Flooring of Portsmouth, VA recently celebrated their 60th Anniversary in business and with that milestone the 3rd generation of the company takes the reins. The company founded in 1947 by Arthur L. Cherry, Cherry Rug Company cleaned and stored rugs for clients from New York to Miami. This was before wall-to-wall carpet became popular, so customers would send in their rugs to be cleaned and stored being changed out from winter and spring. Arthur's son, Bradford "Brad" Cherry began working in the family business at the age of 13.

After college, Brad Cherry returned to the family business to help his father run the newly established retail business. The rug cleaning business was phased out in the late 1960's as the company began evolving into commercial and contract work.

Now, Cherry Carpet & Flooring serves the Greater Norfolk, VA area as the largest commercial flooring provider in the market. The company serves a wide variety of customers in the commercial market but has focused on healthcare and educational work over the years. Cherry Carpet & Flooring has held the state contract for carpet for more than 20 years providing material and installation services to just about all the state colleges in the area.

A true testimony to the company’s success is the longevity of their business and their employees. Several employees have been with the company for more than 30 years.

In 2007, Brad’s son, Ross Cherry was named Chief Operating Officer of the company and is now in charge of the day-to-day operations. "I’m secure in knowing that, under Ross’ guidance, the business will continue in the footsteps and traditions of my father and myself," Brad says with satisfaction and pride.
